Happy Heiny Cloth Diapers,
Inserts and Wipes Care and FAQ’s
The following information is provided directly from the manufacturer:
Store wet and soiled diapers in a dry pail. There is no need
to rinse soiled diapers prior to washing. The solid waste of older babies can
be removed by gently shaking the diaper over a toilet.
|
Remove
inserts from pocket prior to washing. Then:
- Cold
Soak
- Wash
on hot with slightly less than 1/4 cup of detergent
- You
can add a downy ball of vinegar to the wash if desired. I recommend a
downy ball because it releases the vinegar at the right time. You do not
need to wait by the machine.
- Rinse
well to ensure all detergent is removed from diapers.
- Drying
in the dryer is allowed for PUL. We personally dry our PUL products on
high heat and although we have had prolonged use with these products we
have not noticed any break down of our PUL. Drying on high heat can keep
your Happy Heiny functioning like new.
|
Detergents
to use:
We recommend Tide,
Sunlight, Cheer, Era, and Clout (Costco brand) These are not made with any of
the natural oily substances which leave residue on fleece.
Detergents NOT to
use:
Natural soaps are
often made with oils. These should NOT be used. They will leave a residue on
fleece causing it to repel urine.
The following detergents will cause a soap build up. Do NOT use them.
Dr. Bronners Soap,7th Generation and Bio-Kleen.
Baby detergents
such as Ivory Snow, Dreft and any ALL free
detergents.
Sport-Wash and Sensi-Clean - Potential for detergent burn in babies.
Never use fabric
softener of any kind on diapers. Liquid fabric softeners and dryer sheets both
leave a waxy residue on diapers which causes fleece to repel urine and
decreases the absorbency of other diapers.
The use of diaper
rash creams can cause repelling. For best results either place a small wash
cloth on top of the fleece or use a rice paper/gerber
paper liner.
Stripping
Diapers:
Build up refers to
residue left by detergents, fabric softeners, and other substances used to
clean diapers. In rare instances, baking soda will react with certain minerals
in water and also cause build up. If you notice a decrease in the functionality
of your diapers, build up may be the culprit.
Stripping refers
to the removal of residue on diapers. To strip diapers, simply hand wash your
diaper with your regular dish soap (gets the oils out), add a bit of dish soap
to the fleece, either rub the fleece vigorously
together or use a medium bristle dish brush or hard bristle tooth brush to
scrub the fleece. Turn inside out and repeat on this side. Rinse very good,
making sure that the water runs clear. You may use this method at any time you
feel that the diaper may be repelling or as a preventative measure once a week.
If you are still having problems, special cleaning agents may be used to strip
diapers. These options include a very hot wash using 2 scoops Oxyclean or you may also try a hot wash with 1 ball of RLR
(found at Wal-Mart in the laundry aisle hanging on a clip).
Hemp:
Your hemp product
has been professionally washed and dried 1 time. It will need up to 8 more
washings and dries before it is fully absorbent. When washing you hemp the
first few times do NOT was it with your fleece products. Hemp has natural oils
in it and the oils can coat your fleece. After your hemp has been fully primed
you may wash it with all of your diapering products.
FAQ’S
Do you need a cover
with a Happy Heiny?
No you do not need a cover with a Happy Heiny. You do
need one though with our Happy Hempy and Heiny Huggers. We suggest using Stacinator
covers for these but any cover will work well.
Do you need to
pre-wash any of the items?
Because there are several people touching our products before they reach you,
we do suggest that you prewash everything before use. The hemp products are
washed by our mill but because they contain natural oils we suggest washing a
few times prior to use. Unlike many fabrics hemp becomes better with more
washings. It takes roughly 8 washes before all of the oils are removed and the
hemp is fully absorbent. We do suggest that you do not wash new hemp with any
fleece products. The oils can cause repelling.
What works
better Prints or Solids?
This really depends on your child. We suggest solid diapers for use over-night
and longer times in between changes. The prints are made of cotton fabric so
some people may experience wicking in the legs is the insert is wet. We suggest
that you use your print diapers during the day-time and change your child every
1 1/2-2 hours.
How often do I
need to change the diapers?
Cloth diapers are not like disposables. You do have to change the diapers every
1 1/2-2 hours during the day. During the night you will use either a night-time
diaper or you will add more stuffing to your pocket diaper.
A very important thing to remember is that your diaper is only as good as what
is in it. This means that if you only use 1 insert and the diaper is wet you
may need to either change more often or add additional stuffing.
How many diapers do
I need?
Your newborn will need to be changed 10-12 times a day, after about 2-3 months
your baby will need to be changed 6-10 times a day. You will want to do laundry
at least every 3 days if not sooner. You may use the above guide to determine
how many diapers per size to buy. You will need 1 insert for each day time
diaper and 2-3 inserts for each night-time diaper.
Do I really need to
add all those extras to my laundry?
NO please do not add anything extra to your diaper laundry unless you need to.
The simpler the better. I always just throw my diapers in the wash, add 1/4 cup
of tide, and turn it on. When they are done I throw them in the dryer. Then
take them out and stuff. The easier the better.
How can I get stains
out?
Sun. Take your wet diaper and hang to dry in the sun. If the stain is stubborn
squirt it with a little lemon juice and it should come right out after drying
in the sun.
What about the dryer?
Everyone has their own comments regarding the drying of cloth diapers. We
recommend that you dry your pocket diapers as often as you want to. I
personally dry mine on high with every wash. Drying your diapers in the dryer
will actually help to keep them functioning perfectly.

Bumkins Cloth All
In One Diapers Care and FAQ’s
The following information is provided directly from the
manufacturer:
RINSE
After removing soiled diaper
from your baby, shake solid waste off the diaper as best as possible (not
necessary for breast-fed infants). Some parents prefer to rinse diapers in cold
water to prevent stains from setting. When using the Bumkins All-in-One diaper,
be sure to fold the velcro tabs inward onto the small
loop piece beside it, to prevent the tabs from sticking to each other during
the wash.
WASH
Wash diapers in warm
water with your choice of laundry detergent. Non-chlorine bleach is the only
type that should be used on the diapers. We recommend pre-treating only the diapers
that require special attention rather than adding bleach to the load. Chlorine
bleach causes rapid deterioration of all fabrics and the use of it will void
all guarantees on any Bumkins products. An extra rinse may be necessary if you
have very hard water or tend to use more than the recommended amount of
detergent per load.
DRY
Tumble or hang the
diapers to dry. Expect that they will take more time to dry than other
clothing, particularly the Bumkins All-in-One diaper. Turn All-in-One diapers
inside out, flipping the inner panel to the other side. If they are not
completely dry after one cycle in the dryer, hang or air them to dry. Excessive
heat from the dryer will wear the diapers out more quickly. Do not use fabric softener
(liquid or sheets) as they work by “coating” the fabric. This will decrease the
absorbency of the diapers and could cause skin irritation.
PRE-TREATMENT & STAINS
Treat a soiled diaper
promptly to avoid stains. Rinse with cold water and use your preferred
stain pre-treatment
product on the cotton area, according to package directions. Alternatively,
dilute Borax and any
non-chlorine bleach with water and pour or spray on soiled area. Do not let the
diapers dry out with the stain treatment on them. Some stains may come out
right away, others may gradually fade after a few washes and treatments. Hot
water will set stains, so a cold pre-rinse is recommended as well as a cool or
warm wash. Using Borax or a diluted Baking Soda mixture in the diaper pail will
neutralize odors and ammonia build-up. Keep any liquidfilled
diaper pail away from baby’s reach. Sometimes the waterproof fabric may get
stained, particularly from breast-fed baby’s stools. Treat the area promptly
using a stain pre-treatment. Most stains will gradually fade after a few
washings. If odors linger, soak overnight in a borax or baking soda and
detergent mixture. Hanging the diapers to dry in the sun will naturally keep
your diapers white and fresh.
DETERGENT & BLEACHES
Various detergents
produce different results in cleaning and stain prevention. National brand
detergents (Tide, Cheer, etc.) eliminate stains well and keep the diapers soft and
clean. Enzyme stain and odor treatments
also work well and do not harm the diapers. Nonchlorine
bleach is safe to use, but will be more aggressive on the cloth, accelerating the
thinning of the cotton over time. Non-chlorine bleach may discolor the
waterproof fabric, so test your preferred stain treatment before applying it to
everything!
Chlorine bleach, as well
as oxidation products such as Oxyclean, will
drastically decrease the strength of the fabrics, as well as discolor the
waterproof fabric and velcro. The use of chlorine
bleach will void any product warranties.
FAQ’S
HOW DO CLOTH DIAPERS COMPARE TO DISPOSABLE DIAPERS IN TERMS
OF
ABSORBENCY?
Disposable diapers can
absorb more urine than cloth diapers because they contain a chemical
component inside the
layers of paper pulp that enhances absorption by turning baby’s urine into
a gel. They get heavier
when full, rather than overflow. Dispoable diapers
may not show any
sign of leakage, leaving
parents unaware that their child is staying in a urine filled, chemical-laden
diaper far longer than
is healthy or hygienic. Cloth diapers can absorb the normal amount of urine
that a baby can output
at one time or possibly two. Additional absorbency can be gained with
the use of Inserts,
ideal for for heavy wetters
or longer periods of time. Diapers should be
changed once they are
wet or soiled, so the extra absorbing features of disposable diapers
shouldn’t be deemed a
healthy advantage.
HOW DO I KNOW WHICH DIAPERING SYSTEM IS BEST FOR US?
Many parents start with
one system and switch to another as their baby grows and diapering
needs change. Or, many
use the “mix-and-match” method of using both the All-In-Ones and
the two-piece system,
even using disposables upon occasion. A newborn baby may be best
diapered in the
two-piece system for best leakage protection and to keep costs to a minimum.
As your baby becomes a
toddler, our All-In-One may become the best-suited choice. Finding
the routine that’s best
for your family often times takes a few weeks—be patient!
HOW MANY DIAPERS WILL I NEED?
To decide how many
diapers to buy, balance how often you want to launder the diapers with
how many your baby will
use a day. A general guideline is as follows: The first few months
of life involve a lot of
diaper changes—approximately 12 per day. Babies at this age tend to
urinate small quantities
very frequently and have watery bowel movements. Starting at about
three months, there will
be less “messy” diapers and more wet ones with less frequency. Diaper
changes will be reduced
to 8-10 a day. By the end of the first year, the daily use of diapers
drops slightly, and by
18 months your baby will use only 6–8 diapers a day. Once you know
how many diapers you
need each day, and have established your laundry routine, you will be
able to determine the
quantity of diapers that suits your family best.
HOW MANY COVERS WILL I NEED?
Initially, newborn
babies will have very watery bowel movements and the cover may get soiled
frequently. Once past
the first few months, the Bumkins Diaper Covers can be used through
two or three diaper
changes. We find it works best to rotate a couple of covers throughout the
course of the day,
allowing them to air out between changes. Four covers in each size is a bare
minimum; six are
recommended for convenience. Babies often fit into two different size covers at
the same time. Having
two sizes on hand will give you a nice supply without buying too many in
each size. This is also
helpful for double diapering, as two diapers will fit better in a larger size.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SIZING?
Correct sizing is
important for comfort and leakage protection. To find the correct size for your
baby, consult our
guidelines for each product. These guidelines are based on average weight
and height ratios and
are generally accurate. If you know that your baby always needs a larger
or smaller size in other
clothing, then make that assumption for our diapers. If in doubt, or your
baby is close to the end
of our recommended weight for that size, it is best to buy the next
largest size. Our
All-In-One diapers and our cotton diapers are all sized to fit after shrinkage.
Wash and dry one diaper
to make sure that the fit is satisfactory before washing the whole batch.
HOW DO I KNOW WHEN IT IS TIME TO CHANGE SIZES?
Changing the size of the
diaper or cover is necessary as baby grows. Typically, when the diaper starts
showing regular leakage through the top
waist area, it is time to move to a larger size. If a diaper is too small, it
can’t provide sufficient coverage and will leak. Alternatively, if regular leakage
is occurring around the leg area and the use of an insert doesn’t help, the
diaper or cover may be too large. Not
all babies will need all of the sizes of diapers or covers - but most babies go
through at least three sizes.
WHAT DO I DO WITH SOILED DIAPERS?
Solid waste should always
be shaken off a diaper prior to storage. This step is optional if the baby is
breast-fed. If you do laundry frequently (every 1–3 days), diapers that contain
only urine do not need to be rinsed. Remove as much solid waste as possible
from the diaper, rinse in cold water if preferred, and put it the diaper pail
until wash day. Alternatively, use your tub or laundry room sink as a rinse
station – use a bucket to collect the waste as you run water over the soiled
diaper. Empty the bucket into the toilet when you are finished.
Minimize diaper rash
by keeping your baby clean and dry. Allow baby time to play without a diaper
every so often!
WHAT ABOUT DIAPER RASH?
Skin wetness is the
common denominator underlying the various causes of diaper rash. Urinary wetness
increases skin friction and raises the skin pH. These
effects combine to intensify the action of stool enzymes or other irritants that
then inflame the skin. Instead of commercial wipes, use warm water and a mild
baby soap to clean the area. Let baby’s bottom thoroughly dry before closing
the diaper and allow more open air play! When signs of a rash begin, try using
a diaper rash ointment. Make sure you are
using a mild laundry
detergent and extra rinse to remove all traces of detergent from the cotton.
If the rash is severe or
persistent, check with your baby’s physician.
WHAT ABOUT LEAKAGE?
A diaper will leak for
one of two reasons: either the fit isn’t right, or it is entirely full. You
can minimize leakage by
changing your baby’s diaper frequently and by “double diapering”
whenever it is likely
that you will go a long period between changes. Inserts, sometimes
referred to as
“doublers,” can also be used in our All-In-Ones to increase absorption with
heavy-wetters, at nighttime or on long outings. Generally, any of
the Bumkins diapers will
absorb the usual amount
of urine that a baby can output at least one time, sometimes two.
Additionally, cloth
diapers, like all clothing, get thinner with repeated laundering. You may
notice that older diapers
require the use of an insert more often. Diapers can also leak if they
do not fit properly -
changing sizes may help if you begin to notice consistent leakage. When
using the two-piece
systems, be sure the diaper is completely tucked inside the cover and that
the covers fit properly.
CAN I USE CLOTH DIAPERS WHEN WE’RE ON THE GO?
Simply remember to pack
a wet bag or a couple of plastic bags for wet
diapers (zip-lock style
works well), some diaper wipes and a supply of diapers in your diaper
bag. “All-in-One”
diapers are especially handy for outings and travel.
HOW LONG WILL THE DIAPERS LAST?
Bumkins All-In-One
diapers will last an average of 150 washings. We can’t predict the exact
length of time that your
diapers will last, but we do have important suggestions to help keep
them in their best
condition. Please remember that a cloth diaper is an article of clothing, and
it
will eventually wear
out! Bumkins Diaper Covers are true work-horses, and because they do not
get the same aggressive
and frequent laundering as the All-In-One, will last much longer. Our
cotton Fold-Over and
Flat diapers also last an exceptionally long time, since they do not have
elastic, waterproofing
or Velcro which are the more heat sensitive components.
